Interoperability. IBC can carry packets between enabled chains through relayers, but an IBC connection does not automatically share validator security.
ATOM scope. ATOM is Cosmos Hub's fee, staking, and governance token rather than a universal token for every Cosmos chain.
How do Avalanche and Cosmos Hub work?
Avalanche
Avalanche's Primary Network combines the P-Chain, C-Chain, and X-Chain; the C-Chain provides EVM-compatible smart-contract execution.
Snowman is Avalanche's linear-chain consensus protocol. Validators repeatedly sample stake-weighted peers until repeated responses meet the decision threshold.
The P-Chain records validator sets across the network. Avalanche L1s are separate validator sets; the older Subnet model remains supported, but Avalanche documents L1s as the current path for new networks.
AVAX committed to a Primary Network validator is locked for its validation term and returned when that term ends. Those staking terms are separate from an Avalanche L1's own validator and token rules, so a C-Chain comparison does not describe every Avalanche network.
Cosmos Hub
Cosmos Hub is one proof-of-stake blockchain in the wider Cosmos ecosystem. It runs the Gaia application, uses ATOM for staking and governance, and connects to other enabled chains through IBC.

- Scope and liquidity: C-Chain apps, the X-Chain asset exchange, and separate Avalanche L1s do not share one app environment or one set of market conditions.
- Compatibility: The C-Chain supports familiar Ethereum contracts and wallets, which makes it a close comparison with BNB Chain and Polygon.
- Security and control: Primary Network validation and an Avalanche L1's own validator rules are different; assess the chain that actually holds the assets or app.
Cosmos Hub
Cosmos Hub provides ATOM staking, governance, and IBC-connected services on one chain; the wider Cosmos ecosystem remains a set of separately scoped networks.
- Transfers and scope: Cosmos Hub can send IBC packets to enabled chains, but the destination chain, channel, relayer, asset denomination, and available route still determine whether a transfer works.
- Compatibility: Gaia modules and Cosmos Hub contracts use a different account, wallet, and execution environment from Ethereum; an EVM contract or wallet connection does not carry over automatically.
- Security and control: Bonded ATOM secures Cosmos Hub. Other connected chains can use separate validators unless they adopt an explicit shared-security relationship, so Hub statistics do not describe the wider ecosystem.
