How does Avalanche work?

Avalanche's Primary Network combines the P-Chain, C-Chain, and X-Chain; the C-Chain provides EVM-compatible smart-contract execution.

Avalanche is a Layer 1 whose own network validates and records its transactions.

Snowman is Avalanche's linear-chain consensus protocol. Validators repeatedly sample stake-weighted peers until repeated responses meet the decision threshold.

The P-Chain records validator sets across the network. Avalanche L1s are separate validator sets; the older Subnet model remains supported, but Avalanche documents L1s as the current path for new networks.

AVAX committed to a Primary Network validator is locked for its validation term and returned when that term ends. Those staking terms are separate from an Avalanche L1's own validator and token rules, so a C-Chain comparison does not describe every Avalanche network.
